TEDxUIUC – Madhu Viswanathan – Bottom-Up Solutions for Subsistence Marketplaces

Posted on May 31st, 2010 by admin in marketplaces | No Comments »

Madhu Viswanathan’s research programs are in two areas; measurement and research methodology, and literacy, poverty, and subsistence marketplace behaviors. His research on subsistence marketplaces takes a micro-level approach to gain bottom-up understanding of life circumstances and buyer, seller, and marketplace behaviors. He directs the Subsistence Marketplaces Initiative and has created unique synergies between research, teaching, and social initiatives. All three arenas involve engagement of large and small businesses and social enterprises, as well as a diverse set of students and faculty across different disciplines. He founded and directs the Marketplace Literacy Project a non-profit organization that offers marketplace literacy programs in subsistence marketplaces.

This talk was recorded at TEDxUIUC 2010 (4/10/10), which was organized at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by a group of students led by Cristian Mitreanu.

People have friends. They graduated high school. They have cars, they have jobs. Then they decided to get a 2 bedroom apartment when rent was cheaper (in comparison to today), but they didnt want to do anythingexcept drugs.
They had no fantasies to live out. They were never home. Where did they go? Usually they would have a lot of friends over to do drugs, and fall asleep where they fell. But who had blankets? At least they knew who these people were.
Never had any money, but they had a TV, A VCR, but they had enough money for drugs, go to raves, and go to parties or raves that were local or in other cites.
Other people took drugs and watched something on tv, but that idea is lost among the public. Do kids in high school and in there early 20 still like to get together and watch movies while frying on acid?
The Video stores, with VHS, are going out of business or selling there stuff. They have no more trippy movies to rent for people to have fun. While others are supposed to work, what can these people stay up till 3 am? The neighbors dont hear anything at the apartment and when you get there at 11:45 am and ring the doorbell or knock on the door; what happens?
No guilt conscience. Others got to do everything they wanted to, while others restricted you even if your friends are doing it and the parents encourage it. Others are so good looking girls without lives nobody asks them any questions.
Other people do it. DRUGS ARE OPTIONAL: LSD MARIJUANA. Have you ever watched that movie while tripping on ACID? nobody remembers this. And they lie about it.
They had no money except drugs. Money to buy drugs. They didnt want to go to a movie; they didnt want to go to a midnight movie; they didnt want to go to a stage production of ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, they didnt look in the newspaper ectto find film festivals at colleges.
This trippyness is lost on others. I know of a guy pushing 50 who still likes to get stoned and watch movies late night, especially STAR TREK original series episodes. Another guy-who probably died-was living off social security in a cheap apartment, lived for movies. I dont know where he got his money from.
Lets bring back the old watching movies late at night with friends or alone without guilt because it is fun. Midnight movies EXORCIST. Get with your friends on the computer to watch youtube videos, make multiple accounts to leave comments, but now the word is GET A LIFE. Nobody said that during the 1980s video arcade that were in abundance.
During the summer they show free movies outside, there is gypsey cinema held in the most redicilouse places. When it is raining rent a video, sit in a darken room with friends or alone (hope nobody else says stupid things like Why dont you watch it out here???) and relive the experience. Old School, but its fun! YOU DONT HAVE TO TAKE DRUGS but think about all the other experiences others had; being able to watch I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE without somebody walking in on them.
