I have no idea how to even start this…any suggestions?

Posted on February 17th, 2010 by admin in b2b marketplace | 2 Comments »

You are a mid level manager for the sales department of a software firm. The organization presently specializes in retail sales but will be launching a Business to Business (B2B) emphasis within the next six months. This new emphasis will require the use of an outside sales force.

As a manager, you are in charge of making the staffing decisions to handle this new project. You will have to assess the skills and competencies of your current 20-person team in terms of the demands of the new project. Since none of your current team has B2B outside sales experience, will six months be enough time to train some or all of your employees on B2B outside sales techniques, or will going to the external marketplace be the best solution?

Your will need to prepare an outline for your firms HR department that details the staffing strategy that you want to implement. In developing this strategy, outline your thought processes and defend your recommended strategy.

This must be for a college course in Human Resources or Business Management, correct?

It’s hard for me to give any advice because I haven’t taken the course and I don’t know the parameters that are allowed.

Are you allowed to reach out to headhunters and staffing services?

What kinds of training can your company invest in?

I sort of have a real life touch into this. My husband’s company just launched a new B2B sales team of which he is one of the higher level sales people. He worked for the company starting in an entry level customer service position so he already knows the company inside and out.

I guess I might employ a strategy which includes hiring a company to do training in the appropriate length courses for the product being sold. Try to promote from within first thus opening the positions up to qualified current employees in lower level positions. You can also hire new people who have 3-5 years B2B sales experience, with a preference in people who have worked with technology. You don’t want to have to train people on how to do B2B sales as well as the product in which you’re selling.

Hope that helps with a start!
